EVOLUTION-ary THOUGHTSinspired us to create Evolution Comics. He was an important
writer/editor of comic books for over 20 years and was one of the first comic
fans to become a comics pro. We got to meet him and talk a few times and were
even more impressed with his knowledge and sense of humor. When Nelson died in
1987, we decided to start a comic book company with stories that have plots and
characterization, accurate history and science, appeal to a wide range of people,
and feature characters who are heroic and likeable.
Nelson believed that comic books could be a universal medium and
aimed his comics to all age groups. In the days when comics were mostly for
younger readers, he tried to include older fans (like himself) in his target
audience. As comic books became directed toward adult readers, he
wrote and edited comics that also appealed to younger fans. We do
the same thing here at Evolution Comics.
We chose the name Evolution Comics only partly because it shares the
same first initial as E. Nelson Bridwell's name. Evolution is going on all the
time. "Constant change is here to stay!" We also chose this name because the
word means growth, and we think of comics as a growing art form.
Comics used to have a reputation of being shallow, silly penny
dreadful adventures. We believe that stories can have depth of characterization
without sacrificing gripping plots. Our characters will be motivated, not just
puppets in a story.
People who read comics are not dummies, so our comics are well
researched. Nelson was extremely well-read, incorporating mythology,
Shakespeare, the Bible or any other religious text, history, science or the
classics into his comic books.
Like Nelson, we feel comic book heroes should be Heroes in
every sense of the word: role models, bigger than life, noble and successful
yet with human qualities.
Comics used to be considered the lowest form of storytelling,
in terms of both writing and art. That hasn't been true for a long time,
and finally even people who don't read them are realizing that comics are
a great communications medium. Evolution Comics will help that realization
along in every way we can.
