Indicator species are plants and animals (vertebrates or invertebrates) whose presence or absence indicates the health of an eco-system. They might be a predator from the top of the food chain whose presence indicates that there is also enough prey to sustain them and enough of the prey's food. Indicator species might also be plants or insects that thrive in polluted environments and replace the plant species that are normally in that eco-system.
